Who am I? I have existed since long before your society, your species, your world, your galaxy. I am... the First Person.
- The First Person
The First Person, also self-titled as "I", is a presently orphaned character originally conceptualised for a game project called Omega Point. It serves as either an antagonistic or neutral party depending on events in its original concept, and otherwise leans antagonistic in stories it has been reconsidered for.
The First Person desires to absorb all minds into itself and become a universe unto itself.
Like similar beings, the First Person is never seen directly. Rather, it only shows itself to other characters through its symbol on computer hardware and other mediums.
Personality
While it would claim to be focused on collective good, the First Person comes off as self-righteous and unsympathetic. It cannot understand individualist needs and refuses to empathise with others on an individual level, choosing to make judgements on other people's actions purely on societal patterns.
It cares more for what it see as good for the whole — to be self-sustaining and unifying — rather than good for the individual, which leads it to bias the majority or the vocal instead of equitable.
It has a habit of projection — the First Person sees individuality as selfish and childish, and yet it cares only for humanity to be assimilated into itself under the belief this is for everyone's own good, where it can organise and dictate the will of the collective.
Story
The First Person claims to be, literally speaking, the first person. By this it means it is the first conscious and sapient being to have come into existence in the universe. Whether this has any truth to it is questionable, as there is no evidence for or against this claim.
In Omega Point
The First Person was found by a deep-space probe sent out by humanity. Though the astronomers believed they brought the being back of their own accord, the First Person intentionally attached to the probe to be brought back to Earth. When it first arrived it was dormant, simply observing human behaviour. Deciding human society is chaotic, it planned to create order and eventually lead up to the assimilation of humanity.
Depending on the choices made by the player character, it would meet one of a few possible fates. It would either assimilate all of humanity — the protagonist included — into its own mental world, the protagonist would force the First Person to release all of humanity's consciousnesses, or the First Person is killed at expense of Earth's technological development.
Abilities
As a representative of The Symbolic, the First Person has power over conceptual things. It is able to manipulate mythology and historical records to bias concepts it finds advantageous. It cannot manipulate choice and subconscious thought of an individual however. It is able to control a generally understood and accepted idea, but this won't stop individual subversion. For individual persuasion it must talk to someone directly or have a living proxy.
Development
The First Person is part of a trio across multiple works themed around Jaques Lacan's Three Orders. These include The Real, Imaginary, and Symbolic. The Symbolic is concerned with language and ideological conventions — it is the mind of society creating a shared understanding and it further influencing how we understand the world.
In earlier drafts the three concepts/characters were also the same species, but this is presently arguable.
In Omega Point, it was to be implied talking about the First Person as "the eye" was homonymous with "the I".
