Allan is a recurring world in the Unityverse, serving as the home world for Jirbyth ei Kalith, Ivan Flint, and Tyr ei Hymirth. Allan is a small "flat" world resembling a floating island within a nebula, populated by humans and Rimanats.

Overview

Allan is comprised of one super-continent, two smaller continents, several islands, and a sea that's walled in by the mountain range known as Jormungandr. Despite its appearance, Allan has an orbit around its sun and a moon, like other planetary bodies. The means in which it maintains this orbital harmony is unknown. The inhabitants of this world do not know that their home is contrary to the usual shape.

In myth, the mountain range Jormungandr is believed to be a giant sleeping snake holding everything in the world together. If the snake were ever woken by a dangerous thought, then Allan would be destroyed.

Civilisation

There exists three major regions on the main continent: Mitsu, Northland, and Arahas.

  • Mitsu is home to the Rimanat species. While there are multiple settlements throughout the region, the biggest village is simply known as the "Rimanat Village", which is home to its chieftain and biggest centre for religious worship.
  • Northland is the largest region in the world. Its capital is Harman City, named after the long-ruling Harman Family. Harman City is the most densely-populated human location in the world, holding most of its technological development, research, and education.
  • Arahas is a more sub-tropical country that serves as a trade partner with Northland. It provides produce that is unable to otherwise grow or be raised inland of Northland.

Allan's technological development is very environmentally minded, focused on renewable energy and affecting the landscape as little as possible. Cars do not exist — travel by the common population is done by foot, creature-drawn carriage, or by the subway network. Dirigibles (airships) exist, but are used exclusively by political entities and the royalty for private travel and meetings.

Psyches

Psyches are the ability to manipulate and manifest certain compounds and forces with the power of thought. This ability is practised by roughly a third of the human population, though an even smaller proportion is capable of using it offensively. Psyche power is not limited to Allanians, but of known worlds Allan puts the most research into the phenomenon.

Psyche ability is divided into six elements: Flame, Aero, Aqua, Gaia, Sol, and Luna. Every individual has a specific element they are tied to, and this element rarely ever changes during their life. The elements are additionally divided into worldly and heavenly types: Flame/Aero/Aqua associated with worldly power, and Gaia/Sol/Luna being associated with the cosmos itself.

The strength of the elements is influenced by presence of the element in the environment. Hot locations make it easier to manifest flames, and full-moon nights make it easier to control Luna energy, for example.

History

As of Disarrayed Unity and Witness to Unity, Allan is nearing its 2000th year in its present-day calendar. While civilisation is much older than this, no records exist of what the world was like before Year 1. It is generally theorised in hushed whispers that a great disaster befell the world, and keeping records out of the public's hands is done to prevent repeats of such downfall.

Vanaheimr once was home to a space centre, but research into other worlds has long been halted after astronomy was made illegal sometime into the first century, by the first Supreme Leader. The name Allan also comes from this first Supreme Leader posthumously.

Within the home of the rimanats is the Black Forest, a forest of gnarled dark-leaved trees surrounding a massive hole. This ancient chasm once released the Parasite into the world, and the trees that resulted are petrified victims of the Parasite.

Notes

  • Allan is another one of those ancient concepts that I developed from things I thought up in my teenage years. Any thematic or nomenclature inconsistencies can be blamed on holdovers from that~.
  • Allan's moon contains elements that affect Luna psyche energy. As a result, there would be worlds in the Unityverse whose natural satellites do not let off this energy, making such powers much weaker.
  • Allan does not have seasons.
